Laredo Cosmetic Dentist on After-Hours Injuries
In our time as a Laredo Cosmetic Dentist practice, we have seen quite a few patients who have dealt with dental emergencies. Issues involving your teeth can pop up at any moment, no matter the hours of the office, and can be caused by a slew of incidents. Below we have provided some tips on saving your teeth if you cannot make it to get into the office or an emergency room right away.
For those unfortunate times that a tooth gets knocked out or falls out, the key to keeping it alive is keeping it wet. If placing the tooth back where it came from, without touching the root is not possible, you can keep it between your cheek and gum on your way to the dentist. If it is afterhours, keeping it in milk until you can make it in to the office is recommended. Make sure you do not store the tooth in water.
Sometimes fracturing or breaking of a tooth can also occur unexpectedly. Washing your mouth out to remove any sharp debris is an important first step to take. Use a cold compress or ice to keep swelling down on the face over the spot where the injury occurred. Do not use your tongue to pry at or poke the area of incident, for it could cut you or do further damage. Heading to your Laredo Cosmetic Dentist office or an emergency room as soon as possible is ultimately recommended.
To forgo some of these mouthful mishaps, a few steps may be taken in prevention. To lessen the likelihood of self-imposed fractures, do not chew on popcorn kernels, ice, hard candy or use your teeth to open packages. Mouth guards can make a huge impact on prevention of teeth falling out also, so be sure to use one when playing contact sports.
In case of a more serious emergency, please remember to always call 9-1-1 and go to a hospital, safely, and as soon as possible.
